Admissions Policy for Birtley Community Pool
- General Admission Policy
1.1 Opening Hours:
Birtley Community Pool is open to the public during the following hours:
- Weekdays: 6:15 am – 9:30 pm (except on Wednesdays, when the pool closes to the public at 7:00 pm).
- Weekends: 7:00 am – 4:00 pm.
Please note that opening hours may vary for specific activities such as club sessions and pool parties.
The pool’s schedule and specific activity hours will be prominently displayed at the facility and on the pool’s official website.
1.2 Admission Age Restrictions:
- Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult (16+ years) at all times while in the pool area.
- The adult must maintain direct supervision of the child, meaning they must be within arm’s reach at all times.
- Children aged 8-16 are permitted to enter the pool unaccompanied but may be subject to swimming competency checks for certain activities (e.g., deep water swimming).
1.3 Swim Test for Deep Water:
- Children under 12 wishing to swim in the deep end of the pool must pass a swim test to ensure competency.
- The test will involve demonstrating the ability to swim one full length (25m) confidently and tread water for 30 seconds.
- Lifeguards reserve the right to reassess swimmers at any time.
1.4 Maximum Capacity:
- The pool has a strict capacity limit to ensure safety. Once capacity is reached, entry will be temporarily restricted, and a queue system may be implemented.
- Lifeguards and reception staff will monitor the number of people in the pool at all times.
1.5 Health and Safety:
- All patrons must follow the pool’s rules, which are displayed in prominent areas.
- Diving is only allowed in designated areas.
- Running or horseplay is prohibited around the pool area.
- Patrons who are found not complying with health and safety rules may be asked to leave the premises.
- Group Admissions Policy
2.1 School and Group Bookings:
- Schools and large groups (e.g., youth clubs, community organisations) must pre-book sessions to ensure availability and appropriate lifeguard coverage.
- A ratio of 1 responsible adult for every 10 children must be maintained. For children under 8 years old, a ratio of 1 adult per 5 children is required.
- Schools and groups must provide a register of attendees and a point of contact for group supervision.
2.2 Swim Competency for Group Sessions:
- Group leaders must ensure that children’s swimming abilities are evaluated before entering deep water.
- Non-swimmers must wear armbands or other floatation devices in areas exceeding their height.

3.1 Membership Options:
- Birtley Community Pool offers a membership option:
- Individual Membership: For adults aged 16 and over.
3.2 Membership Benefits:
- Members enjoy unlimited access during public swimming hours and lane swimming.
- Members can access family swimming. However, others in the family who do not have a membership will need to pay for their swim.
- Members are eligible for discounted rates on aquafit.
- Members must present a valid membership card upon entry.
3.3 Membership Terms and Conditions:
- Memberships are non-transferable and must be used only by the named individual(s).
- Misuse of membership cards may result in membership suspension or cancellation.
- Memberships are renewed on a monthly basis and can be cancelled any time.
- Health Declarations and Medical Conditions
4.1 Medical Conditions:
- Patrons with pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., epilepsy, heart conditions, respiratory issues) must inform pool staff upon admission to ensure safety procedures can be followed in case of emergency.
- Lifeguards reserve the right to request further information or clearance from a medical professional if there is concern regarding a patron’s ability to safely use the facility.
4.2 Pregnancy and Postpartum Admission:
- Pregnant women or those within six weeks of giving birth should consult a medical professional before engaging in any swimming activities.
- The pool offers specific classes and times for prenatal and postnatal exercises.
- Special Admissions for Swimming Lessons
5.1 Swimming Lesson Registration:
- Swimming lessons are offered for all age groups, from babies to adults.
- Registration for lessons must be completed via the pool’s website or in person at reception.
- Lesson fees must be paid in full before the commencement of each term or block of lessons.
5.2 Trial Sessions:
- Potential new swimmers can attend one trial lesson before committing to a full course. Trial lessons are subject to availability and must be booked in advance.
5.3 Swim Levels:
- All swimmers will be assessed and placed in appropriate classes according to their skill level.
- Movement between levels will be determined by the instructor once the swimmer has achieved the necessary competencies.

6.1 Accessible Facilities:

6.2 Admission for Carers:
- Patrons with disabilities requiring a carer are eligible for free admission for their accompanying carer.

- Code of Conduct
7.1 Behavioural Expectations:
- All patrons are expected to behave respectfully toward staff and other pool users.
- Aggressive or abusive behaviour, whether verbal or physical, will not be tolerated and may result in expulsion from the facility and/or suspension of membership.
7.2 Dress Code:
- Appropriate swimwear must be worn at all times in the pool/s. Cut-offs, denim, and other non-swimming fabrics are not permitted in the pool.
7.3 Prohibited Items:
- The following items are not allowed in the pool area:
- Glass containers.
- Sharp objects.
- Alcoholic beverages.
- Inappropriate flotation devices (e.g., large inflatables that obstruct lifeguards’ view).
