Activities Available at Birtley Community Pool – Your local swimming centre

Welcome to Birtley Community Pool! Explore our wide range of aquatic activities designed for all ages and skill levels. Check out the details below for our regular pool activities.

No booking required, just come along and pay at the desk! 

Adult Lane Swimming

Join our Adult Lane Swimming sessions for swimmers aged 16 and over. We offer designated lanes for fast, medium, and slower swimmers, promoting safety and comfort. Enjoy unlimited swimming during these sessions, while adhering to lane direction to minimise collisions.

Public Swimming

Our public swimming sessions provide the opportunity for swimming in a unstructured way, without needing to follow directional guidance. Public swimming is available in the main pool and both the small pools. You can swim for as long as you wish when public swimming is available.  

Adult to Child Ratios at Birtley Community Pool for Public Swimming

• 1 Adult to 1 Infant (ages 0–3).
• 1 Adult to 2 Children (ages 4–7).
• Children 8+ who can swim 25 metres do not need supervision. For children 8+ who struggle to swim 25 metres, we would recommend adult supervision.

Walking in Water

Participate in our Walking in Water sessions in the improver pool, featuring a constant depth of 1m. This self-guided activity provides excellent cardio and resistance exercise, promoting muscle toning while being gentle on your joints.

Fun Sessions with Inflatable Obstacle Course and Water Slide

Fun sessions run on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday afternoons during term time and most weekdays during school holidays. Please check the pool timetable for the times of these sessions.

The inflatable obstacle course is open to adults and children aged 8+ who can swim 25m. Children aged 4-8 may participate with close adult supervision. Two participants can use the obstacle course together.

The water slide is available for all ages, but children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

Each session can accommodate up to 100 people, with the main and small pools open. The improver pool will be closed during these sessions.

Fun session prices:

• Adults and juniors 16+: £5.50
• Children 4-15: £5
• Children 0-3 for waterslide and small pool only: £1

Family swim prices are not available during inflatable and water slide sessions.

Aquafit

Our Aquafit classes cater to all fitness levels, offering a low-impact workout in the water.

Our sessions are on:

Tuesdays 12pm led by Andrea Liversidge

Tuesdays 7:15pm led by Jamie Colligan in the Improver Pool

Wednesdays 9:15am led by Andrea Liversidge

Each sessions will last 45 minutes.

It costs £7.50 per session, and for members £5. There is also an option to make a block payment of 10 sessions for £68, for members this is £50.

Enjoy a fun, social atmosphere with qualified instructors leading each session.

Aqua-Social Classes

Aqua-Social classes are on Mondays at 10:30am in the Improver Pool. This session involves gentle exercise, this is a self-led session supervised by staff member Megan who can give out reminders for different gentle moves. Complementary tea and coffee is provided for this session.

Aqua-Intro Classes at Birtley Community Pool

Aqua-Intro is a gentle, joint-friendly workout that combines water-based movement and simple exercises to promote muscle toning and flexibility. Perfect for those looking for a lower-impact alternative to Aqua-Fit, this class is led by Jason Metcalfe, a qualified physiotherapist, and designed to improve mobility, balance, and endurance in a safe, supportive environment.

Using water’s buoyancy to reduce joint strain and its resistance to build strength, Aqua-Intro is an ideal option for beginners, those recovering from injuries, or anyone seeking a refreshing way to stay active.

Classes run every Thursday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Join us for a great workout that also supports Birtley Community Pool!

Family Swimming

Our family swimming sessions offer a fun experience for family groups, with access to the small & improver pools and half of the main pool. The other half will be reserved for lane swimmers, so families can enjoy their space freely. Floating toys will be available in the small pool for children to play with.

We provide discounted rates for family groups compared to individual session prices. This offer also applies during public swimming sessions, as shown on the timetable, where families can use the non-lane portion of the main pool.

Pool Parties

Host memorable Pool Parties at Birtley Community Pool!

• Availability: Fridays 7:30pm – 9:30pm. Saturdays 4:00pm – 6:00pm.
• Activities: Choose from inflatable obstacle course and/or water slide for the first hour. You can opt for both activities or select one for a reduced price.
  • You can choose whether you would like the giants causeway or the log piece on the inflatable course.
  • There is also a choice of having the smaller inflatable run added for an extra fee.
  • You can also choose to add 30 minutes to your pool time for an extra fee, this reduced the refreshments time in the spectator area to 30 minutes.

Information:

• Pool time: 60 people (including adults).
• Refreshments in the spectator area: 40 seats around the table + 20 spectator seats. You must provide your own food.
• Adult to Child Ratios for parties: 1 Adult to 1 Infant (ages 0–3). 1 Adult to 2 Children (ages 4–7). Children 8+ who can swim 25 metres do not need supervision. For children 8+ who struggle to swim 25 metres, we would recommend adult supervision.

Booking Details:

To book your pool party, please email us your party booking form at least 1 week in advance to ensure availability. You must give at least 2 week’s notice of cancellation to receive a refund (beyond the deposit, which is non-refundable). A deposit of £50 must be made to reserve the date, the remaining amount must be paid no later than 5 days before the date of party.
